Why your's new TV does not fit the space you measured
The number on the box is a diagonal, not a width — and the gap between the two is where returns come from. Two multiplications settle it before you order.
The measurement everyone assumes
Ask someone how wide a 65-inch television is and most will say 65 inches. It is 143 cm — about 56 inches — because the advertised figure runs corner to corner. On a 16:9 panel the width is roughly 87 per cent of the diagonal and the height about 49 per cent.
The two multiplications that matter
Work in centimetres and the sums are quick. Multiply the inch figure by 2.21 for width and by 1.24 for height:

What the table leaves out
Three things, all of which have caught people out:
- The bezel. Add one to three centimetres per side. Specification sheets list the physical dimensions separately for this reason.
- The feet. Modern sets often place feet near the outer edges rather than a central pedestal, so a narrow bench may be unusable even when the width fits.
- The route in. A boxed 75-inch television is wider than most internal doors and will not turn on a tight stairwell.
The check worth doing
Mark the width and height on the wall with masking tape before ordering. It takes two minutes, costs nothing, and is the only method that accounts for skirting boards, radiators and the socket you forgot about.
Why the diagonal became the standard
Television screens were measured diagonally from the earliest cathode-ray sets, because the tube face was round and the diagonal of the rectangular image was the only figure that described the tube itself. When flat rectangular screens arrived the convention was already entrenched across catalogues, price lists and advertising, so it stayed.
The consequence is a number that describes shape poorly. Two screens can share a 34-inch diagonal and differ by twenty centimetres in width if one is 16:9 and the other 21:9. Retailers know this, which is why the physical dimensions always appear further down the specification sheet — usually with and without the stand.
Wall mounting adds its own numbers
If the set is going on the wall, the diagonal stops being the constraint and the VESA pattern takes over. That is a grid of threaded holes on the back, quoted in millimetres — 200 × 200, 400 × 400, and so on up to 600 × 400 on large panels. A bracket rated for 400 × 400 will not fit a 600 × 400 pattern, and no amount of goodwill closes the gap.
Two further measurements matter once a bracket is involved:
- Depth from the wall. A fixed bracket adds two to four centimetres; a full-motion arm adds six to twelve when folded, and considerably more when extended.
- Cable clearance. HDMI and power connectors on the rear need room to bend. On a slim wall mount you may need low-profile right-angle cables, which are a different purchase entirely.
A worked example
Say your alcove is 130 cm wide and you are considering a 55-inch television. The panel is 121.6 cm wide, the bezel adds around 2 cm to give 123.6 cm, and the bracket sits entirely behind the screen so it adds nothing horizontally. You have roughly 6 cm of clearance — tight but workable, provided the alcove sides are square and the plaster is not bowed.
Move up to 65 inches and the panel alone is 143.7 cm. That does not fit, regardless of how appealing the price is. The next viable size down is 60 inches at 132.6 cm, which still exceeds 130 cm. The honest answer is that 55 inches is the largest set that alcove takes.
The takeaway
Convert the diagonal, derive the width, add the bezel, then check the delivery route and the mounting pattern. Four numbers, five minutes, and a return avoided.
