How far to sit from your television

The right screen size depends less on your budget than on your sofa. Too close and you see structure in the image or have to move your eyes to follow the action; too far and you have paid for detail you cannot resolve. The maths is simple once you know which rule applies to your resolution.

Resolution decides the distance

Viewing distance guidance exists because the eye can only resolve so much detail at a given angle. Once pixels fall below that threshold they blend into a continuous image; sit closer and the structure becomes visible.

For 1080p, a comfortable range is roughly 1.6 to 2.5 times the screen diagonal. A 40-inch set therefore suits about 1.6 to 2.5 metres. Four times the resolution changes the arithmetic considerably: at 4K you can sit at 1.2 to 1.5 times the diagonal, so a 65-inch television works from about two metres.

The other way round is more useful when the room is fixed. Measure the distance from sofa to wall in centimetres and divide by 1.5 to get a sensible 4K diagonal in centimetres, then divide by 2.54 for inches. A three-metre distance gives 200 cm, which is around 79 inches — comfortably a 75-inch set. That is why the rule of thumb of buying the largest screen the wall will hold has become reasonable advice in the 4K era, where it was poor advice in the 1080p era.
