Converting running pace: divide, do not multiply
Distance multiplies by 1.609. Pace divides by it. Get that backwards and your race plan is 60 per cent out.
The trap
A mile is 1.609344 km, so eight-minute miles must be about 12.9 minutes per kilometre? No — that would make you slower for covering a shorter distance. Pace is time per distance, so the conversion inverts: 8 ÷ 1.609344 = 4.97 minutes, or 4:58 per kilometre.
The method
- Minutes per mile to minutes per km: divide by 1.609344.
- Minutes per km to minutes per mile: multiply by 1.609344.
- Decimals to seconds: multiply the fraction by 60 — 0.97 minutes is 58 seconds.

The useful one to keep: 5:00 per kilometre is 8:03 per mile. Within three seconds is close enough for training.
Race distances in both systems
5 km is 3.107 miles, 10 km is 6.214, the half marathon is 13.109 and the marathon 26.219. The last figure is why the shorthand is 26.2.
Do the maths before, not during
Build a split table in the units the course is marked in, and set your watch to match. Converting at kilometre 30 is how people talk themselves into a pace they cannot hold.
Why the inversion trips people up
Distance and pace look like the same kind of quantity and behave in opposite directions. Distance is kilometres; pace is minutes per kilometre. When the unit sits in the denominator, multiplying by the conversion factor moves the number the wrong way — which is why the mistake produces an answer that is obviously absurd yet still gets written into training plans.
A useful sanity check: a kilometre is shorter than a mile, so your pace per kilometre must always be a smaller number than your pace per mile. If it is not, you have multiplied where you should have divided.
Speed is the other way round again
Speed — miles per hour or kilometres per hour — has distance in the numerator, so it converts like distance. Multiply mph by 1.609344 for km/h. Treadmills complicate this by displaying speed while runners think in pace, so here is the bridge:

To convert speed to pace, divide 60 by the speed. At 12 km/h that is 60 ÷ 12 = 5 minutes per kilometre.
Building a split table
For a target marathon time, divide the goal by 42.195 to get pace per kilometre, then multiply back out for each marker. A four-hour marathon is 240 minutes over 42.195 km, or 5:41 per kilometre:
- 10 km — 56:52
- Half marathon — 1:59:59
- 30 km — 2:50:37
- Finish — 4:00:00
Write those on your wrist in the units the course markers use. Converting under fatigue is where good plans fall apart.
Why your watch reads long
Certified courses are measured along the shortest possible legal route, one metre from the kerb on bends. You run wider than that, weave past other runners, and your GPS samples a slightly noisy path on top. One to two per cent over the official distance is normal and is not a fault in the watch — it is why finish-line pace never quite matches watch pace.
