How far to sit from a 4K television
Four times the pixels means you can sit closer. Here is the distance that suits each size — and the size that suits your sofa.
Resolution sets the distance
Viewing distance guidance is about resolving detail. At 1080p, sit closer than about 1.6 times the diagonal and you begin to see pixel structure. At 4K there are four times as many pixels, so that threshold moves in to roughly 1.2 times the diagonal.

Working from the room instead
Most people cannot move the sofa. Measure from the seat front to the wall in centimetres and divide by 1.5 for a sensible 4K diagonal in centimetres, then divide by 2.54 for inches. Three metres gives 200 cm, which is 79 inches — so a 75-inch set is comfortable.
Height, not just distance
The centre of the screen wants to be near seated eye level, around 100 to 110 cm from the floor. Mounting a television above a fireplace looks tidy and puts your neck at an angle for the whole film.
The honest caveat
Source quality outranks all of this. A heavily compressed stream on a large screen at close range looks worse than a clean source on a smaller one. Buy the size the room supports, then pay attention to what you feed it.
The reasoning behind the ratios
Human visual acuity is usually taken as one arcminute — the angle at which two points stop being distinguishable. Convert that into pixels at a given distance and you get the point beyond which extra resolution is invisible, and below which pixel structure becomes apparent.
At 1080p on a 55-inch screen, individual pixels are large enough that sitting closer than about 2.2 metres reveals them. Quadruple the pixel count and the same screen tolerates 1.7 metres, because each pixel is half as wide in each direction.
Field of view, the other way to think about it
Cinema recommendations are stated as a horizontal field of view rather than a distance. SMPTE suggests around 30 degrees for general viewing; THX recommends up to 40 degrees for a more immersive picture. Working from field of view rather than a rule of thumb gives:

Note how closely the immersive column matches the 1.2× rule for 4K. The two approaches agree, which is reassuring for a guideline built on rules of thumb.
Mounting height matters as much as distance
Get the distance right and the height wrong and you will still be uncomfortable. The centre of the screen should sit near seated eye level, which for most sofas is 100 to 110 cm from the floor. Above-fireplace installations typically put the centre at 140 cm or higher, forcing a sustained upward gaze.
If the fireplace is unavoidable, a tilting bracket recovers some of the geometry, and a full-motion arm recovers most of it — at the cost of depth and a visible mechanism.
What actually limits perceived quality
Resolution is rarely the bottleneck in a living room. In rough order of impact: source bitrate, then contrast and black level, then colour accuracy, then resolution. A well-mastered 1080p Blu-ray routinely looks better than a heavily compressed 4K stream on the same panel.
- Streaming 4K typically runs 15–25 Mbps; a 4K Blu-ray runs 50–100 Mbps.
- Room lighting affects perceived contrast more than any specification on the box.
- Motion handling matters for sport and is not described by resolution at all.
